At the college, we discuss the ethics of climate change, focussing on the common good: a balance where all living elements have equal chance to live well in the physical, social, and spiritual life. How do environmental ethics apply here in Kenya?
When I asked the students how they think climate change negatively impacts the balance of the common good, one student replied: it takes away happiness.
A class discussion followed. Happiness – is found in balance; in equal chance. While many in the global South lack equal chance for a balanced physical life – in a Western Capitalist world/worldview, people can pour their time into the pursuit of financial gain and corporate career success – which can impact their spiritual and social life.
It seems like what one side of the globe lacks, the other has. Isn’t it time the two sides meet…and walk together, for the common good of both?
